The SIlence acousmatic art festival and the acousmonium M.ar.e were born in Bari in 2004, promoted by the association Musica & Arti Elettroniche (M.ar.e) with the help of J.Prager.
Since 2010 they have permanent headquarters at the "Cittadella Mediterranea della Scienza", a structure created to stimulate the interest of joung people in science and technology.
Here the M.ar.e association organizes educational and dissemination initiatives concerning both the acoustic dimension of sound and the perceptive one.
The group that manages activities is made up of Franco Degrassi, Vincenzo Procino, Alessandro Duma and Danilo Girardi.

The M.are acusmonium is the device that allows the annual Silence Festival to be held, as well as "external" concerts for other institutions.
The acusmonium consist of about forty speakers hi-fi and p.a., of a control audio console and other devices.
Both for economic and "political" reasons, "poor" components (if at all possible) have been used, even those recycled or homebuilt.
M.ar.e think that the quality of the sound projection depends above all on the heterogeneity of the speakers and the "personality" of each pair of speakers in relation to the others.
According to a model proposed by Jonathan Prager the M.ar.e acusmonium consist of:
2 speakers of reference, good quality, facing the audience, at the centre of the concert hall;
a series of pairs of stereos in front of, behind and on each side of the audience that multiply the sound image making "sound screens" of different width, distance and timbre quality;
"dedicated" speakers taht reproduce narrow parts of the sound spectrum (low, high..).
The acousmatic interpreter, at each moment of the performance, activates a pairs of speakers or a group of pairs, bringing out in the concert hall the "inner space" of the composition that was conceived by the author and fixed on the support.
So the relevant parameters are the sounds' perceived distance and tridimensionality, the loudness, the number of speakers in action, the velocity of the transformation from one space to another
